About Us
The early 70's was a time of change. The great interstate highways gave express travel to the beautiful Green Mountain State, but in doing so, brought the demise of literally thousands of family owned shops of gifts and crafts and motor courts with their charming individuality. Such places were rarely out of view on old U.S.Route 5 as it meandered through the lush Connecticut Valley. The interstate truly marked the end of an era... a gentler time in these parts.
The Hungry Bear Restaurant, then called Coutees, was built in 1971 as of the first establishments to anticipate the need to service the interstate traveler. At the time the building was smaller and sported a 60-foot canopy fronting the restaurant --a popular hamburger stand of the time. Serving a limited menu on paper plates and boasting fair prices and homestyle specials, the restaurant's popularity as a meeting house grew, and it has remained so ever since.
In 2004 the restaurant underwent a major facelift and format change, becoming the Hungry Bear Pub and Grill. Under the same ownership since 1991, and boasting the same attention to fair pricing and great food, the meeting house atmosphere has been brought forward to the present.
So as one of our regulars or as a passer-by, stop for awhile and enjoy our commitment to great food and libation.Rick and Terri Hume
